The 2023-25 Lender Center for Social Justice Fellowship Project will be led by Professor Nausheen Husain, assistant professor of magazine, news and digital journalism in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Husain will direct five students in a public-facing research and writing project analyzing American news coverage of “War on Terror” policies, those policies’ effects on communities and the resistance shaped against this policy infrastructure. This work will be carried out in collaboration with Nicole Nguyen, associate professor of criminology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, as well as Muslim community-focused advocacy organizations and media analysis groups.
Students from any discipline and background are encouraged to apply to serve as a Lender Student Fellow. We’re excited about working with students from all academic disciplines who are passionate about news media and public messaging, community advocacy and social justice.
Selected applicants will work on the project for two years. Lender Student Fellows will be provided a $2,000 stipend between 2023-25, and have opportunities for additional funding.
Selected fellows will:
- work closely with the faculty fellow and collaborators to design academic research on news coverage;
- learn how to use oral history methods to conduct trauma-informed interviews within communities affected by War on Terror policies;
- research and write about resistance projects and movements during the past three decades of War on Terror policies; and
- present their work at the 2025 Lender Symposium.
